What is a wildcard record?

A wildcard is designed to return an answer if a more specific record/answer is not defined–a catch all response. Prevents DNS from answering with a NXDOMAIN. The standard wildcard node is represented by the * (asterisk) and can be used with any resource record type except SRV records, which must start with an _(underscore).
